What is the Programme Content?

You will learn the basic techniques of silversmithing for jewellery such as piercing out sheet metal, annealing metal to soften it, basic soldering, adding texture, how to form work three dimensionally, working with mixed media and create your own Fastenings. You might possibly learn to set a stone (depending on how you progress). If not, this will be covered during the second term if you re-enroll. Exploring art and design is a particularly important part of the course so you can develop your own style of design. We will look at the work of different jewellery artists and derive our own designs from external sources. Most classes begin with a short demonstration of technique. This is followed by workbench time for you to develop the technique to your own design. As much one-to-one support will be given as possible. Health and safety will also be covered in an appropriate way for the subject.

Who is it for?

For complete beginners to this subject. For those with an interest in a magical art form who would like to create their own jewellery. You must have a certain amount of upper body strength because you will be working with hammers and some heavy forming tools. Because we work on very small scale work you will need to have good hand-to-eye coordination and good attention to detail.

What prior experience and knowledge do I need?

Absolutely none.

What materials or equipment do I need to provide?

You will pay for all your own materials. Your tutor will provide a small amount of copper free of cost for the first session to get you started. You will also need to pay for your saw blades, solder, emery paper and drill bits which are available to buy from your tutor. Your tutor will do their best to make options available at different price ranges for you. Your tutor will be able to give you suppliers to buy from and often has a stock of basic Silver, copper and stones you can buy at cost price.

What materials or equipment do we provide to you?

All tools and equipment.

How will I be assessed?

Your tutor will carry out very regular, informal assessments of your work. They will observe you working and assess your finished work. Feedback will be given to help you develop knowledge and skills to improve your work. You will set your own personal goals, and your tutor will give regular written feedback on those too.
