What is the Programme Content?

This is a very practical hands-on course. There will be live demonstrations and recorded demonstrations by your tutor which cover the relevant techniques and design ideas. You will look at the work of well-known contemporary and classic artist makers to develop design ideas of your own. You will spend a lot of time on practical work, building up your skill level to design and make jewellery or fine products of your own. You will also be involved in deciding which topics will be covered on the course. The course will also include essential health and safety for silversmithing. You will learn all about Sterling Silver, Gold, Copper and Brass that are used in the industry.

Who is it for?

This course is ideal for those at the Improver/Intermediate/Advanced level to develop advanced techniques.

What prior experience and knowledge do I need?

You will need to have a minimum of improver level skills. By this we mean you can anneal correctly and can solder (with confidence and accuracy) a number of complex joints.

What materials or equipment do I need to provide?

All tools and equipment for use in class are provided by us. You may decide to buy some hand tools of your own to avoid sharing in class and enable you to work at home. Your tutor can advise you about this during the course. You will pay for all your own materials such as sheet metal, wire and gemstones. You will also need to pay for your saw blades, solder, emery paper and drill bits which are available to buy from your tutor. Your tutor will do their best to make options available at different price ranges for you. Your tutor will be able to give you suppliers to buy from and often has a stock of basic Silver, copper and stones you can buy at cost price.

What materials or equipment do we provide to you?

All tools and equipment for use in class are provided by us. You may decide to buy some hand tools of your own to avoid sharing in class and enable you to work at home. Your tutor can advise you about this during the course. As above, you are responsible for the cost of all your materials.

How will I be assessed?

Everyone will receive regular supportive and developmental feedback verbally. Everyone will receive regular supportive and developmental feedback in written form in the Individual Learner Plan weekly journal.

Is the programme accredited?

No.

What can I do next?

You can progress to do a qualification in Jewellery making and silversmithing with one of our Awarding Organisations.
