It is important to remember that there are still those within the community who are isolating during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some of the learningSkills team have joined up to support the volunteers at Age UK Gateshead.

Ever since the government’s guidelines on social distancing were introduced, Susan Newton has worked with Age UK to make weekly phone calls to clients. She calls these clients to check if they are OK and have any needs such as shopping, medication or anything else.

These volunteers have developed wonderful relationships with members of the community who may otherwise feel isolated during this time. Some of the clients feel more secure knowing that they have not been forgotten and that someone is there to help them.

Susan has commented that the clients ‘look forward to me calling and recognising my voice. I have been thanked so many times for the calls which makes it all worthwhile for me.’

Age UK have thanked Susan and all the volunteers on their Facebook page. Click the image to view the post in Facebook.

We at learningSkills would like to say thank you for all of those helping the community during this time.

If you have participated in any volunteering, or have received the support of someone who has volunteered, please let us know in the comments section.
