Beginners and Improvers Stained Glass

Accredited learning course which gives the opportunity to develop practical skills in stained glass work. The first part of the course will focus on developing skills and confidence in using related tools and materials to enable you to cut glass accurately and develop knowledge of leading and foiling techniques. Project work will focus on completing a piece of work using each of these stained-glass techniques and skills will include glass cutting, lead and copper foil soldering and finishing and polishing techniques. We will also be looking at methods of designing for stained glass and you will create an original template based on a design style of your choice

What is the Programme Content?

Level 1 stained glass Individual and group demonstrations in each class will help you to develop skills in the use of particular techniques including: • Accurate cutting of glass • Uses of cutting and grinding tools • Leading and soldering techniques • Copper foiling techniques to make more intricate pieces for indoors. • Design skills related to making a stained-glass template. • Cementing and polishing skills to make your panel waterproof and give it a professional appearance. • Methods of inserting a panel into a window aperture if appropriate to your chosen project. Level 2 stained glass You will continue to practice and develop your skills in making stained glass work, focusing on developing your own original design work. You will focus on either a leaded or foiled glass project. • As part of your project, you will have the opportunity to incorporate elements of painted or fused glass work and demonstrations of these techniques will be given during the course. • We will be looking at the different types of glass which can be used in stained glass work in more depth. • You will be given individual guidance on the development of your personal project work. • Inspiration and subject matter for your work will be based around your interests and choice. For both the level 1 and level 2 courses you will be required to collate a file containing a record of your progress and project work during the course. This will be assessed during the course and moderated once your course is complete.

Who is it for?

The level 1 course is suitable for beginners to the subject, and you need have no prior experience to join this course. The level 2 course is for returning learners who have either completed the level 1 course or who have some prior experience of working with stained glass techniques

What prior experience and knowledge do I need?

No prior experience

What materials or equipment do I need to provide?

• Tutor will email a list of basic equipment prior to the start of the course. This will include everyday tools such as a hammer, nails, a board to work on etc.

What materials or equipment do we provide to you?

We provide the following: • Specialist tools such as glass cutters, pliers, grinders will be available at the centre for you to use. • Supply of consumable materials including glass, lead and solder will be available for you to purchase during the course. The cost of this will be dependent upon the size of your panel. • Beginners For your first panel the tutor will have all materials that you will need and there will be a charge of approx. £6.00 for the finished piece that you make, based on A4 sized panel.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed on the progress of your project work and development of individual skills during the course through 1.1 reviews with tutor. Your completed file will be moderated in the middle and at the end of the course.

What can I do next?

If you enjoy working with glass, you could continue onto the next stage of learning in stained glass at level 2 or level 2 certificate level. You may also like to try working with fused glass and there are a range of courses available focusing on this area of glasswork.
