Beginners Stained Glass Level 1 and 2 NCFE Award

This is a wonderful skill and hobby where you can make authentic pieces for your home. During the course you will work towards a level 1 or 2 award and develop skills in using a range of stained glass techniques including glass cutting, soldering and designing and using the two methods of joining stained glass, copperfoiling and traditional leading technique. You will use these skills to make a copper-foiled lightcatcher and a small leaded panel. These can be from templates provided by the tutor or can be made to your own original design.

What is the Programme Content?

You will : Develop the accuracy of your glass cutting skills Explore leading techniques Apply copper foil tape to glass Understand basic measuring and designing skills to make a stained glass template Solder on copperfoiled and leaded stained glass Cement and polish to complete panels and achieve a professional finish Implement health and safety procedures associated with all above techniques Evaluate completed project work.

Who is it for?

This course is for those who are interested in further developing their stained glass.

What prior experience and knowledge do I need?

No prior knowledge or experience necessary. All instructions will be provided.

What materials or equipment do I need to provide?

You’ll need to bring a pencil, a ruler and some A3 or A2 (depending on the scale you want to work) sketchbook paper to plan, design and record your sculpture. You'll also need to bring your paint brushes, water pots and palettes for painting.

What materials or equipment do we provide to you?

Supply of glass, lead and solder. Range of tools including oil filled glass cutter, pliers, hammer, rigid Stanley knife or lead knife, supply of nails. A4 ring-binder to store information. Sketchbook or scrapbook (you will find this useful for designing and working out your ideas

How will I be assessed?

Your progress will be assessed against the personal targets that you set yourself in discussion with tutor at the beginning of the course. In addition to the overall course targets, you will identify the skills/knowledge that you personally would like to achieve. Your tutor will give verbal and written feedback throughout the course.

Is the programme accredited?

Yes, you will get a level 1 or 2 award from NCFE in creative crafts
