Enamelling and Jewellery for Wellbeing

You will learn how to make individual jewellery using metal and vitreous enamel. Enamels are a form of powdered glass. These are applied to sheet metal and then fired in a high temperature kiln to produce beautiful vibrant coloured jewellery. You will begin with the basics of sifting enamel onto a copper surface then progress through the different types of enamel work to develop skill and technique.

What is the Programme Content?

You will learn from watching live demonstrations by your tutor, looking at Slides presentations on technique, and discussing ideas with your tutor and peers in the class. The course will be very practical and hands-on making. We will discuss the work of established enamel artists to develop inspirational ideas for your designs. You will know how to work safely. The course is fully supported by a Google Classroom site that stores all the work we cover so you can refer to it later.

Who is it for?

You do not need to be a silversmith to do this course. However, your tutor will help you develop these skills if you wish. You can work completely on ready-made blanks if you do not. This course is suitable for you if you already like to make your own jewellery and want to try something new. This course uses a type of powdered glass so it could be a valuable addition to your skills if you already know about fused or stained glass.

What prior experience and knowledge do I need?

You do not need any prior experience to do well in this course. Complete beginners will be warmly welcomed. You will receive all the support and guidance you need.

What materials or equipment do I need to provide?

You will be responsible for the cost of your materials (metal and enamel). We can use either copper or silver to work on and it is entirely up to you which you choose. You will need to wear an FFP3 mask around the enamels because they are powdered glass. This is to protect you. Your tutor has a supply of these which are reusable and cost under £1.50 each. In session 1 you will need to bring a pad and pencil. As the course develops you will need one or two low-cost items such as a paintbrush.

What materials or equipment do we provide to you?

We will provide most of the tools you require. We have two kilns available to share and a series of mesh and stilts to rest your work on.

How will I be assessed?

The tutor will give you constructive verbal feedback in class each session and written feedback on your individual learner plan. You will set your own targets and write a short sentence about how your work has gone during the session each week.

Is the programme accredited?

No
