What is the Programme Content?

You will learn how to draw using the Block in Method. You will learn the effects of light and how these influence tonal theory and how to build a layered painting, however, some new learners may choose to focus only on drawing skills in this first term. For those returning with us, you will develop your portrait/figure or chosen subject painting skills, guided more by your current skills and what you choose to develop. Your tutor will demonstrate how to interpret the subject by considering your subject and how to use composition, colour and brushwork to achieve this. We'll use a private Facebook group, in order to post learning resources, such as YouTube videos. For all learners, there will be a requirement to do certain work at home, to save classroom time.

Who is it for?

This course is aimed at anyone wanting to either learn to draw from scratch, or those with a basic drawing skill seeking to develop their skills. The subjects will be representational, rather than abstract, though learning to draw in a more expressive way can be covered, if you wish to include this.

What prior experience and knowledge do I need?

No prior drawing knowledge needed, just a willingness to learn something new. You should have a moderate knowledge on how to use basic IT skills - sending emails, so we can send you additional resources.

What materials or equipment do I need to provide?

You will need access to a phone with a camera, a PC or laptop and have an e-mail address. An email address would be beneficial. If you have a printer as well that would be ideal. Access to the internet will be essential as demonstrations will be done via YouTube links by other artists. Art materials required (though these would be discussed in the first session) : Drawing - You will need the basic drawing equipment: Standard Graphite pencils (graded pencils HB, 2B and 4B for example), a sketch pad (A4), white paper, an eraser. Painting - You will need: A set of acrylic or oil paints, ideally in the following colours: Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, a blue (Cobalt or Ultramarine), Cerulean (or Pthalo) Blue, Sap Green, Raw or Burnt Umber, Black. A set of brushes: small and medium size rounds in soft synthetics, a medium size flat or filbert in stiffer synthetic or hog’s hair. A palette of some kind (an old plate will do), a thinners or water jar. Appropriate thinners (Turps or white spirit for oils, water for acrylics). A painting medium if you can get one: Winsor & Newton Liquin Original for oils, Slow Drying Medium for acrylics. If you choose to use watercolours, you will find the colours mentioned above useful.

What materials or equipment do we provide to you?

Your tutor will send you presentations, hand-outs and feedback.

How will I be assessed?

The course is not accredited (you won’t be doing a qualification) and there are no exams or tests on the course. Assessment will be via the work submitted, either as artworks or in the Facebook page (this will be optional), where you will receive constructive feedback, usually outlining what has gone well, and how you could improve. There is no other paperwork on the course.

Is the programme accredited?

No, this is not an accredited course.

What can I do next?

You can return to the course the following term, where you will work on a set of projects adapted to developing your skills further, or you can move onto one of our other accredited art programmes.
