During this ceramics course, you’ll develop your ceramics skills and techniques in a fun, social and supportive environment. This course allows you to focus on your creativity and inner sense of wellbeing. Please note that Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland council do not fund non-accredited courses. This means that if you live under any of these councils you will need to pay £206.25 for this course with no concessions as it is not accredited.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to restrictions on funding from NTCA learners from the North of Tyne Authority postcodes will need to pay the full cost of programmes at the time of enrolling which will be more than the price quoted in the online directory. This will equate to £6.50 per hour of learning with no concessions available in regard to age or employment status.

What is the Programme Content?

You will have the opportunity to explore various basic pottery techniques at your own pace, with the freedom to develop your skills and create some ceramics. In addition, this course gives you space to focus on your well-being through creativity. The course will cover a range of hand building techniques including coil building, press moulding, pinch pots, slab building and a wide variety of decorative techniques including glazing. There will also be time dedicated to the potter's wheel for both beginners and improvers.

Who is it for?

This course will give beginners an opportunity to learn a new skill, and for the more advanced learners to increase knowledge in different ceramic techniques. We will be covering coiling, slab building, throwing, turning and a few different surface decorations, using tools, slips and underglazes. Due to the wellbeing nature of the class, we will also be talking as a group and setting some personal goals to help us improve our lifestyle through art and relaxation.

What prior experience and knowledge do I need?

No prior experience is needed for this course.

What materials or equipment do I need to provide?

You do not need to bring any specific equipment, but it might be wise to wear old clothing suitable for a pottery environment. We do supply aprons, but you might want to bring your own. You also may want to purchase your own tools in time.

What materials or equipment do we provide to you?

We provide all tools and materials you will need, including clay, glazes, stains, etc, including the use of the kilns. There is a material charge for this class which equals to £43.75 for the 10 week course.

How will I be assessed?

Your tutor will provide and coach you with continuous support and guidance throughout the course to enhance your skills’ development with the use of ILP’s (individual learning plans) and visual assessment. You will set your own targets and write a short sentence about how your work has gone during the session each week. You will receive all the support and guidance you need to work towards your goals.
