A ceramics course to suit improvers and intermediate learners. The course will cover handbuilding techniques, the potter's wheel, and a wide variety of decorative techniques including glazing. You will be encouraged to explore your own ideas and develop creatively through your own personalised projects to create beautiful ceramic pieces. This will be supported by sketchbook work, but don't worry. Sketchbooks are about communicating ideas rather than how well you can draw, and it really will help you to explore and develop creatively.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to restrictions on funding from NTCA learners from the North of Tyne Authority postcodes will need to pay the full cost of programmes at the time of enrolling which will be more than the price quoted in the online directory. This will equate to £6.50 per hour of learning with no concessions available in regard to age or employment status.

What is the Programme Content?

The course will cover a range of handbuilding techniques including coil building, press moulding, pinch pots, slab building, and sculpting with clay. There will also be time dedicated to the potter's wheel for both beginners and improvers. In terms of surface decoration there are many techniques you will be directed towards using coloured slips, underglazes, oxides, and also glazes. Throughout you will be encouraged to keep notes on your explorations within the subject to enhance your ongoing development. You will also be encouraged and supported to use sketching to communicate your intentions as we plan out your projects together.

Who is it for?

This course is ideal for people who have completed the Level 1 award in Creative Craft in Pottery, or someone at intermediate level who wants to improve their existing pottery skills further.

What prior experience and knowledge do I need?

This course is recommended for those who have completed a Level 1 Award in pottery or someone who is at intermediate level in working with ceramics.

What materials or equipment do I need to provide?

Bring a sketchbook or notebook to keep a record of your designs and of the techniques you will choose to use. These notes will also help you record your progress.

What materials or equipment do we provide to you?

Learning and Skills will provide a wide range of tools and equipment although you can use your own if you prefer. The material fee is included in the course price. If you qualify to receive the course free a material fee of £70.00 will still apply.

How will I be assessed?

There will be an opportunity during the course for you to assess your own goals and what you would like to achieve, based on the course content. Ongoing support, coaching and guidance will be given by your tutor. The tutor will give you constructive verbal feedback in class each session and written feedback on your individual learner plan. You will set your own targets and write a short sentence about how your work has gone during the session each week.
